All at Westgate Chambers would wish to offer our very best wishes to His Honour Judge David Rennie as he retires from the Bench. He was for many years a much-admired member of the Sussex Bar, including being a Door Tenant with us from the early years, before going on to become a very calm and capable Judge.
Richard Barton, Joint Head of Chambers, says, ‘David was a valued colleague at the Bar. Many of us learned a great deal from him about Court craft. I recall, when very junior, seeing him deliver an extempore plea in mitigation which was a little jewel in the art of advocacy.
He managed the transition from the Bar to the Bench sublimely, and has since been an extremely fair and much-respected Judge in Sussex and at the Old Bailey. We, who appeared before him, have over the years on numerous occasions seen him deal with distressed victims, hostile defendants and even irritating advocates, always with the same disarming good grace. He has been an exemplar to us all about how to balance the need to ensure that justice is done with a leavening of humanity.
We will all miss him, and wish him and his family the very best for his retirement.’
