Introduction

With a qualification and background in Mental Health nursing prior to being called to the Bar, Sarah is adept at sensitively handling people, particularly those with mental heath, social or communication difficulties.  She is extremely approachable with a particular skill in dealing with vulnerable clients and their families and gives advice, representation and guidance through all stages of the court proceedings.

Sarah has a mixed practice, which includes crime, all Children Act work and social housing.

Areas of Practice

Crime:

Sarah regularly appears in the criminal court predominately representing Defendants.  She also represents probation, the child support agency, the environment agency and HMRC.

Recent cases include:

  • R v A - Successful application to under s41 MCA 1980 whereby Defendant was subsequently acquitted.
  • R v R -  Defending mentally vulnerable client charges with dishonesty offences with an intermediary needed.  Crown eventually offered no evidence
  • R v M – Extensive representations for a mentally unwell defendant charged with benefit fraud.  Crown offered no evidence
  • R v R – Defendant charged with sexual offences against child under 13 years old; acquitted after representation that the Crown had no case
  • R v M – represented defendant charged with multiple counts of possession of indecent images and breach of SOPO
  • R v P – represented defendant charged with inciting children under 13 years old to engage in sexual acts.

Crown court cases currently instructed upon include:

  • Allegations of possession of firearms and ammunition and supply of Class A drugs
  • Multi handed exportation of 130kg of Khat
  • Conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and allowing premises to be used for the supply

Family:

In family Sarah regularly represents parents, Grandparents, other relatives and Guardians (children) in all aspects of applications including Care orders, Adoption, Special Guardianship and Family Assistance Orders.

Notable cases include:

  • Represented a Mother at Fact Finding hearing where the court made non-accidental injury findings against the father.
  • Represented a Mother facing allegations of over-medicating and causing medical misdiagnosis
  • Represented Father and successfully argued the child should remain with him under a Supervision Order (mother having mental health issues and unable to care for the child)
  • Represented Father with physical disability and allegations of domestic violence.  Successfully argued the children should remain with their father until the outcome of proceedings.

Housing:

Sarah has a thriving Housing practice predominately representing Registered Social Landlords.  This work includes possession proceedings and injunctive relief usually relating to anti-social behavior.  Her ability to deal with difficult situations and vulnerable people including clients, witnesses and defendants is often invaluable at court.

Additional Information

Sarah accepts work under the Direct Access Scheme and is also trained in the recently introduced DVPOs.  She is regularly instructed to give written advice.
