  • R-v-Winter & Winter [2010] EWCA Crim 1474 – junior counsel for the defence representing one of two defendants charged with gross negligence manslaughter arising from the death of two fire officers following an explosion at a fireworks factory.
  • R-v-Jones [2007] EWCA Crim 1118 – junior counsel for the defence in a case involving a nationwide paedophile conspiracy and police entrapment.
  • R-v-Brown 2010 – junior counsel for the defence representing a Church of England vicar in the country’s largest sham marriages prosecution. Instructed as sole counsel in the subsequent POCA proceedings and successfully defended the Crown’s application for an order in excess of £2 million
  • R-v-Matthews 2013 – junior counsel for the defence representing one of many defendants involved in a sophisticated property fraud and money laundering conspiracy
  • West Sussex County Council v LM, KM and CM 2014 – Representing a mother in public law care proceedings facing allegations of over-medicating and causing medical misdiagnosis of a child
  • East Sussex County Council v EM and others 2014 – Representing a mother in public law care proceedings, successfully defending allegations of causing non-accidental injury to a child

Charmaine has a background involving a broad common law practice, having gained experience conducting and advising on civil litigation, employment law, personal injury, contractual disputes, landlord and tenant and prison law.

Charmaine has appeared before the criminal and civil courts at all levels and is regularly instructed in the crown court on behalf of both prosecution and defence in cases of serious violence, sexual offences, firearms, drugs, road traffic including fatalities and financial crime. She has been commended for her attention to detail and ability to breakdown and analyse complex material. She is well regarded for her ability to deal with vulnerable clients in a sensitive and reassuring manner.

Charmaine has experience dealing with proceedings involving local authorities and regulatory bodies and continues to appear on behalf of patients at mental health act tribunals.

Charmaine regularly practises in public and private law proceedings involving children and domestic violence. She acts for applicants and respondents in cases of physical, sexual and emotional abuse, neglect and non–accidental injury, and is experienced in private law disputes relating to residence, contact and specific issues.

Charmaine has lectured on changes in Criminal Procedure and quasi-civil criminal proceedings.
